This plant was known in Ancient Egypt and Greece and even then it was used as a spice for the preparation of vegetable, meat and fish dishes, as well as as a seasoning for wine drinks. Oregano is a perennial plant and grows on the edges of forests, in glades, on hillsides, in the middle of bushes and in open grassy areas.
Having tasted the taste and aroma of wild oregano, people began to cultivate this spice and now it is grown in America, France, Western Asia and other countries. Turkey is considered one of the main suppliers of oregano. In general, there are more than twenty types of oregano growing in Europe.
Oregano is often confused with marjoram, but these are completely different, although outwardly similar spicy plants.
Oregano is a beautiful flowering and very unpretentious plant, it grows beautifully in open sunny areas and needs watering only in dry times and rare fertilizing. This plant is quite frost-resistant, but if the winters in the region are too harsh, it is better to cover it.
Composition of useful substances of oregano
