Use. A plant with a pleasant balsamic smell. Leaves and flowers collected at the beginning of flowering serve as a spice. They contain essential oil (0.3-1.0%), tannins, glycosides and acid saponin. The main components of the oil are cineole, methylhavicol, and linalool.

Fresh and dried leaves and flowers are used in cooking and in the preparation of various national dishes in Greek, French, Italian, and Transcaucasian cuisines. As a seasoning, basil is added to salads, meat and fish dishes, and it is also used to flavor preserved vegetables, pickles, and in sausage production. Dried leaves together with rosemary are sometimes used instead of pepper.

Basil plants are used in traditional and scientific medicine, and the essential oil is used in perfumery.

Origin. The family of common basil is South Asia (India, Sri Lanka).

In case of high Vata-dosha, it is used for administration through the nose in the form of a powder, decoction or mixture with medicinal oils or Ghee oil. Naturally, the method of administration through the nose does not exclude the usual intake through the mouth.

Effective as part of therapy that reduces Kapha. However, basil increases Pitta, so it is not desirable for representatives of this type without clear indications. In this regard, basil is used to treat disorders of the large intestine. It can be used in the complex treatment of hemorrhoids with an imbalance of Vata dosha. Basil is effective as an antiemetic.

For the treatment of candidiasis against the background of Vata imbalance, basil is recommended as a spice added to food.

For the treatment of any cold disease, basil is used in the form of tea or in the form of powder with honey or ghee.

Basil tea can be used for all types of fevers.

Basil is a mild spice, so it can be used not only for adults, but also for children.

Basil is effective in the treatment of nervous disorders, as it clears the mind well and clears the nerves.
