Rakshabandhan or Rakhibandhan is a popular Indian holiday celebrated on the full moon day of the month of Shravan (July - August). On this day, sisters put sacred armbands (called "Rakha") on their brothers' hands, designed to protect them from evil forces, and the young man, in turn, gives his sister a gift and undertakes to protect and support her for the rest of his life. At the end of the ceremony, brother and sister give each other various sweets. On the same day, Brahmins change their sacred Brahmin cord for a new one.
The ritual is not necessarily performed between brothers and sisters, a girl, tying Rakhi to a young man's hand, can thereby become his foster sister. In Indian history, there have been many instances of women seeking protection and patronage in this way from men who were not their brothers, and some were not even Hindu. There are also known cases when the rulers, for the sake of protecting the girls, once tied Rakhas to them, went to war. Rakshas can also be tied in other cases, for example, simply as a sign of solidarity, as was done during the period of India's struggle for independence.
