Description

Material: silver (925)

Country: India

One of the few sacred signs that has not undergone any changes since ancient times, became the OM symbol. Accepted by all traditions of Hinduism and Buddhism, Om still retains its status.
The first mentions of it are found in ancient books of Indian civilization. It has analogies in all the religious written traditions of India, retaining almost unchanged its main features. OM is the personification of the Supreme and its properties, revealed in the symbol. The MU symbol is found in various classical texts of Hinduism. Vedas, Upanishads, Bhagavad-Gita, yogic texts give an idea about the nature of this sacred symbol. Essentially, OM is an expression of the Divine. That which contains the knowledge and power of everything, the cause and effect of what we observe in the universe, the processes of creation, development, transformation and destruction of the subtle and gross. When one manages to understand the meaning of this sacred sign, there are no goals and desires left. The OM symbol is both a means and an end. And there is no higher knowledge than the knowledge of Omkara.

One of the few sacred signs that has not undergone any changes since ancient times is the OM symbol. Accepted by all traditions of Hinduism and Buddhism, Om still retains its status.
The first mentions of it are found in the oldest books of Indian civilization. It has analogies in all religious written traditions of India, preserving its main features almost unchanged. OM is the personification of the Supreme and its properties, manifested in a symbol. The OM symbol is found in various classical texts of Hinduism. The Vedas, the Upanishads, the Bhagavad-Gita, and yogic texts give an idea of the nature of this sacred sign. In essence, OM is an expression of the Divine. That which includes the knowledge and power of everything, the cause and effect of what we observe in the Universe, the processes of creation, development, transformation and destruction of the subtle and gross. When it is possible to understand the meaning of this sacred sign, there is nothing left to be desired. The OM symbol is both a means and a goal. And there is no higher knowledge than the knowledge of Omkara.

"Aum! This sound is all that. Here is his explanation: The past, the present, the future — all this is the sound of Aum. And the other thing that is beyond the limits of three times is also the sound of Aum. This is the universal lord, this is the omniscient, this is the inner ruler, this is the source of everything, the beginning and the end of beings. This is Atman in relation to sounds, the sound of Aum in relation to parts. The feet (Atman) are parts, and the parts are feet: the sound a, the sound y, the sound m."
Mandukya Upanishad

"Om is this space, this is Brahman, the original space. This is the Veda known to Brahmins. Thanks to it, they know what should be known"
Brihadaranyaka Upanishad

Perhaps, due to the diversity of Hindu beliefs and the unity of views, OM can be thought of as a unified symbol, that is, it has absorbed a large number of related concepts for the purpose of systematization. And indeed, it seems that it is quite difficult to find such a wide range of metaphysical principles anywhere else. OM, as a sign of the highest holiness, is present in every text that has a religious meaning, in many mantras and prayers. OM as a designation of Higher Consciousness in the form of sound is a mantra, and as a graphic symbol it is a yantra. That is, it is what can be seen and heard. Through the perception of the sound and image of OM, it is possible to know the Divine through experience.

Omkara in the tradition of natha-yogins

It should be noted that the designation of the sign OM, represented by the two sounds "O" and "M" is not entirely objective. Upon detailed examination, the first sound "O" is the result of the combined pronunciation of the sounds "A" and "U". Consolidation of two long vowels gave the idea of a single sound "O". The quintessence of the ideas of the sampradaya became what was the most essential from the point of view of the natha siddhas.
In the view of the yogis of the natha sampradaya, Omkara is the cause of all that exists, manifested and unmanifested. This is Om, the Supreme Light.
Sattva, rajas and tamas, Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshvara - these three gods reside in the three matras of Om. This is Om, the Supreme Light.
Kriya, iccha and jnana, Brahma, Raudra and Vaishnava - this triple shakta resides in the three matras of Om. This is Om, the Supreme Light".
Viveka-Martanda

Schematically, the symbol is represented by five elements. The dot at the top indicates bindu as the cause of all Creation. The semicircular sign below indicates Shakti, through which the three gunas were manifested: rajas as Brahma and the sound "A", sattva as Vishnu and the sound "U", and tamas as Rudra or Shiva and the sound "M". This is exactly how natha-yogins see the cosmogonic principles that reveal the nature of creation, preservation and destruction, and are represented as the faces of the main Vedic deities. The described five components are also considered as forms of consciousness. A state of wakefulness, sleep with dreams, deep sleep, a state of meditation and a state beyond understanding and comprehension.
