The Bodha Tree - in Buddhism - the legendary tree in the Uruvella grove, meditating under which Prince Gautama attained enlightenment and became the Buddha. It is assumed that this legend mentions a very real tree belonging to the species Ficus religiosa. The Bodha tree is the most revered place of pilgrimage in Anuradhapura. A seedling was grown from the seed of this tree and planted in the Indian city of Bodh-Gaya, near the Mahabodha temple.
The Bodha tree is one of the main symbols in Buddhism, it is common to all Buddhas. In Buddhist monasteries, the tree is specially cultivated and planted.
The tree under which Gautama attained enlightenment in Bodh Gaya has not survived, but a tree was grown from its seed in Anuradhapura in Sri Lanka during the time of King Ashoka. Approximately 50 years after the death of Ashoka, the kings of the Shunga dynasty came to power. By order of King Pushyamitra, the tree was destroyed. After the king's death, a new sprout was brought from Sri Lanka, from which grew a tree that had stood for about 800 years, but was cut down in the 6th century during the reign of the Bengal king Shashanga. Later, another sprout was brought from Anuradhapura, from which a tree grew, which lasted until 1876, when it was felled by a storm. A new sprout was planted in Bodh Gaya from the same mother tree in Anuradhapura, which is still standing.
