In Ayurvedic medicine, this plant has been used since ancient times, and in Ukraine it became famous thanks to the appearance of herbal syrups and cough lozenges in pharmacies. colds Practically none of the herbal preparations of Indian production, be it "Doctor MOM", "KUKA Syrup", "Travisil" or "Suprima Broncho", cannot do without the leading component - an extract from adhatoda vasika, adatoda vasika, or just vasaka. whole leaves and small two-lipped five-membered flowers. Its fruit is a small 4-seeded capsule. The inflorescences of this plant remind the Indians of the shape of a lion, and that is why the Sanskrit name vasaka sounds like simhaka, simhamukti ("simha" means "lion"). This imagery was not reflected in the Latin designations of ego: "adhatoda" is the Latinized Ceylon folk name of the plant - adhatodai, and the word justicia has nothing to do with justice, but is connected with the name of J. Eustis - author of works on horticulture who lived in the 18th century. vasaka grows in India, Sri Lanka, on the island of Java and is cultivated in the countries of tropical America.
For many millennia, the extract of the leaves of vasaka has been used in the treatment of bronchitis, asthma, tuberculosis, cough and shortness of breath. "A decoction of vasa, abhaya (haritakas) and draksha (grapes), mixed with honey and sugar, cures shortness of breath and cough, even if they are very strong," says the classic Ayurvedic treatise "Sharngadhara Samhita". "A decoction of one vasa, mixed with honey, cures purpura, tuberculosis, cough and fever caused by increased kapha and pitta," continues Sharangadhara, emphasizing the effectiveness of vasaka both in combination with other remedies and by itself. The main use of vasaka is its effect on the respiratory and nervous systems, and mainly in this capacity it is part of many classical Ayurvedic remedies, including chavanprash and Agastya haritaka avalehu. as an antiseptic and insecticide. Leaves, fruits, roots, bark, leaf juice with a high content of essential oil and alkaloids, derivatives of quinazoline (vasicine, vazicinol, vazicinone, peganin, N-oxides vasicine, deoxyvasicine and maiontone) are used as a medicinal agent. Adatode flowers contain b-sitosterol-d-glucoside, kaempferol, glycosides and queritin. The presence of vasicin and albatadonic acid makes it possible to suppress the reproduction and growth of staphylococcus, streptococcus, diphtheria and tubercle bacilli, protozoan and coli infections. Vasaka has an expectorant effect due to the fact that it reduces the viscosity of sputum, enhances mucociliary transport, and increases the production of surfactant. It also has a sedative and antispasmodic effect. It shows pronounced anthelmintic properties. The study of the effect on the gastrointestinal tract showed a significant carminative effect, with the relief of nausea, gas colic and flatulence. Reception of vasaka stimulated an increase in fibrinolytic activity in patients with ischemic heart disease, contributed to the removal of triglycerides and cholesterol. The bronchodilatory and antihistaminic effect is provided by the alkaloids vazicin and vazicinone, the action of which is comparable to the action of theophylline, and the expectorant effect is provided by the essential oil contained in the vasa. Studies by D. Chopra showed that the bronchodilator effect increases after the appointment of atropine. The use of vasaka gives a moderate hypotensive effect. It has a somewhat stimulating effect on the work of the uterus, which allows it to be considered a mild abortifacient and, accordingly, should be used with caution during pregnancy, especially avoiding high dosages. etc. Large doses of fresh leaf juice are used for tuberculosis. It is applied locally for pyorrhea and bleeding gums. Dry leaves crushed to a powder state are given in a dose of 30 grains for malaria. Smoke from cigarettes with dry leaves of vasaka is given to inhale to ease breathing in respiratory and respiratory diseases.
Indications for use also include neuralgia, chills, diphtheria, whooping cough, diarrhea, dysentery, rheumatism, skin inflammatory diseases, gonorrhea.
Ayurvedic properties of vasaka system: rasa – bitter, sharp, vyrya – cooling, vypak – sharp, guna – light, dry. Increases vata dosha, decreases kapha and pitta. A special effect - prabhave - is usually associated with a weakening effect and reduction of the kapha dosha.
In siddha medicine, vasaka is considered dry to the second degree, hot to the second degree and has an expectorant effect.
It is part of such remedies as vasavaleha, vasarishta, vasasvarasa, vasadigutika, vasaghrita, vasakhanda and others.
